We do not have a shortage of flash. We don't have a shortage of people willing to do silly, loud, ridiculous things to get attention. We create tumblrs full of people's misguided, but often well meaning, attempts to stand out from the crowd.
We don't have an art shortage. There is plenty.
We don't have a shortage of QUALITY art, there is plenty of that as well.
So what are we missing?
People we can trust.
Authentic relationships.
A sense that we are involved in something that matters.
The public's capacity for art, particularly the sort of art that you have to pay to experience, is limited. It will always be limited.
But the public capacity - the human capacity - for meaning, connection and relationship is limitless. People will flock to that. And yes, people will gladly pay for that.
So here's your question to consider for the new year:
How does my art solve the trust shortage?
How does my art solve the connection shortage?
How does my art solve the relationship shortage?
See you in 2013.
