You've got 1000 people on your email list.
Your open rate is 15%
How many people are REALLY on your email list?
Of course you know the answer is 150. That's the actual number of people who you can reasonably expect to read your email.
That's the number that matters.

You've got 1000 Twitter followers.
50 of them consistently retweet your posts or click through on the links you provide in your Tweets.
That's the number that matters, the 50.
Our ego makes us want to see the 2,000. It makes us want to see the 1,000 people on the email and the 1,000 Twitter followers and call them our "audience". Reality and maturity teach us the hard way that the real audience is closer to 200.
It's a small number (obviously) but a more powerful one. It's a number that can help you make accurate revenue projections that can sustain your artistic practice for the long term.
It's a number that can help you set ALL your expectations properly which can make your life much less stressful.
Keep your eyes on the number that matter, not the numbers that make you feel good.
