Most of the advice I give to artists boils down to this:
If you don't feel strongly about the project, don't do it.
You've got a limited amount of energy, time and resources to devote to any particular thing. You don't have enough to waste on stuff you're doing "just to do it".
Sure, that may mean that you're doing nothing for a while. But this market is so cluttered that doing without passion is pretty much the same thing as doing nothing.
This market hates your B- stuff. They want A+ and it can take a lot of time and effort to get there.
Devote the time, don't waste it on anything less then your best.
Adam,
Thanks for this post. I think what hits home for me is when you said "Sure, that may mean that you're doing nothing for a while. But this market is so cluttered that doing without passion is pretty much the same thing as doing nothing."
Doing nothing can be fearful to some because of what they see other people in the industry doing. THEY are working but you're not and that can set the notions of failure and resentment.
One can't worry about another's journey but their own. This post was right on time. Sometimes you have to say NO and focus on projects that show your best work.
Thanks for reminding me to do just that.
