I get an email from a dance company requesting that I go to see their next show. They describe the show as the following:
"An neoteric fusion of live music, with poetry, dance, and theatre which stands on top of a hip-hop back drop. "X" is often described as a lyrically poetic storytelling form where poetry, tragedy and comedy collaborate in a suspiciously & delightfully improvisational manner; this artistic approach to performance grows out of the hip-hop theatre genre and yet transcends any single art form to author itself."
This description immediately raises some questions like:
1. What the hell does neoteric mean?
2. How the hell does something collaborate in a way that is both suspiciously and delightfully improvisational?
You get the idea.
Consider this a friendly reminder that the word you use to describe your art matter. They can attract or they can push people away.
Those words above push people away out of sheer confusion.
