It's difficult to connect your art with people . . . if you don't like people.
Authentic marketing, the type that cuts through the tremendous amount of noise out there and actually resonates with people, requires that you hold your audience (and potential audience) in pretty high regard.
It means being honest with them, being transparent about your work . . . and always, always, trying to give them a remarkable experience.
But if you don't like people, if you seem them as a little bit stupid, a tad bit inferior, or not worth the effort, then it all falls apart and struggle is inevitable.
I've been waiting a long time for this one to come up. It seems a lot of people like performing for people but can't be bothered to deal with the actual people beyond "look at us, we formed a band!"
And I suppose that can be turned inward as well. If you're not in a healthy position regarding your own self-worth, if that tiny voice that keeps you small dominates your thinking... you need to be looking elsewhere. Art ain't meant as another excuse to feel inferior, except for the clinically insane and the incredibly emotionally masochistic.
