«In the arts, many of us claim to want more or different audiences then what we are getting. We want diversity in our audience . . . we REALLY, REALLY, want a younger audience. That's what we all say.»

There's another side to this. Often with all the talk about going after younger audiences, I'll hear arts managers talking about the existing (mostly older) audience as if they're an impediment: not cool enough, frightening the youngsters away, spoiling our image. Let that attitude emerge too obviously in the frantic drive for younger audiences and you get a second group that doesn't feel wanted!
