An event is projected to make $10,000.
It makes $5,000.
Did it succeed or fail?
For too many of us in my line of work, we would see the show as a failure if it misses financial goals . . . even if it meet the artistic objectives.
One way of changing that would be by having people change their thinking about such things, but that ain't easy.
What is easier, at least in the short term, is having people lower their expectations . . . at least their financial expectations.
Unless you have a clear and compelling reason to think otherwise, never assume artistic work you are about to do is going to make a lot of money.
Removing that expectation can make your life much easier, which in turn can make the art better . . . which in turn gives it the best shot at connecting with a lot of people, and making a lot of money.
