I have arrived in Houston for the National Arts Marketing Conference. Couple of quick observations:
1. Houston voted for Obama. So Texas isn't all bad.
2. There may be 500 different arts org represented here and many of them are in a state of what I call "cartoon panic"
You remember those cartoons where everyone would start freaking out and running around in a state of hysteria. I call that cartoon panic, and the current state of the economy has sparked some of that here.
3. Those also a little bit too much optimism about what Obama will do for the arts. Sure there may be more gov. funding. But some down here are thinking people are going to come flocking to their doors ready to buy tickets and subscriptions just because Obama is president. If you couldn't draw much audience before, having a more progressive president isn't going to change that
