The good part about having a loyal, vocal fan base is that they are loyal. The bad news is that they can be vocal. :)
For example, after each show produced at the day job patrons have a chance to fill out a "fast feedback" form about the performance. Most of the comments fall under the category of "I loved it" or "I hate it".
But how do you deal with the patrons that say "I hated this show so much that I'm never coming back."
Here's two things to consider:
1. They may not mean it. Sure they said it but you would be surprised at how many "never coming back" patrons actually do come back if you give them a reason.
2. Are they critical of your artisitic choices or of the quality of your work? For example, at the day job we recently produced Shakespeare's Titus. A few patrons thought the play was too violent, gory, etc. But hey, Titus is a violent play, we just did the piece as it was written.
We would have a far bigger problem if a lot of people thought Titus was poorly acted, directed, design, etc. People can forgive the occasional "bad" artistic choice. They are much less forgiving of low quality work.
